ULTRASOUND 3D/4D

  • 3D/4D FAQ's

    3D/4D Ultrasound - FAQs

    • WHAT IS A 2D/3D/4D ULTRASOUND?

      WHAT IS A 2D/3D/4D ULTRASOUND?

2D ultrasound works by "listening" to sound waves in a single plane. The ultrasound is directed out and reflected back again. An ultrasound is the interpretation of these reflected sound waves to form a visualization of the baby.

In 3D ultrasound, the same ultrasound used in traditional 2D is emitted-this time at multiple angles. 3D ultrasound images are created by an algorithmic process commonly know as "surface rendering". These multiple reflections are interpreted through sophisticated software, and an accurate 3D image of the baby is instantly created. These amazing rendered images are displayed with incredible surface detail which delineates both body and facial features.

A 4D ultrasound is captured in the same manner as 3D ultrasound-but the rendering occurs many times per second. Instead of looking at a single still image (3D), you are now able to view real-time "video" of the baby in the womb (4D). In this case, that 4th Dimension is "time".

We offer elective 2D, 3D & 4D prenatal Ultrasounds to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with the unborn baby. We feel that realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family. We make no claims that 3-D as used in this examination is performed to better assess the baby for abnormalities

Please Note: Women seeking an elective prenatal Ultrasound with GoldenView Ultrasound must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic Ultrasound ordered by their provider to confirm their due date, screen for fetal anomalies, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues.

During the elective prenatal Ultrasound session, we will be conducting a limited diagnostic scan to confirm heartbeat, the number of babies in the pregnancy, the position of the baby, and the placental location. Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic Ultrasound.

    • IS IT SAFE? ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO ME, OR MY BABY?

Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?

Extensive studies over 30 years have found that Ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is now normal throughout the United States. In 3D/4D scanning exactly the same type and intensity of Ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D and 4D Ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. The technology is similar to radar. A probe placed on the body emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image. 4D Ultrasound will be similar to a conventional scan in terms of exposure.

    • DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?

      Do I need an appointment?

Yes, appointments are necessary for all of our services. Please call our Scheduling Department at 713-461-3399 to schedule your Ultrasound today.

    • HOW LONG DOES THE 3D/4D ULTRASOUND TAKE?

How long does the 3D/4D Ultrasound take?

3D/4D Ultrasound session will last between 30 to 45 minutes.

    • HOW FAR ALONG SHOULD I BE BEFORE I HAVE A 3D/4D ULTRASOUND?

How far along should I be before I have a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D ultrasounds are best done at 24–32 weeks, and ideally between 26 and 30 weeks. Some centers advise customers to come in between 26 and 28 weeks to get the best images. After 32 weeks, there is an increased risk that the fetus has already engaged (descended into the pelvis) and at that time, getting 3D images of the fetus is nearly impossible. As the baby is bigger there is less room so it is even more difficult to get a nice image.

    • HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY 3D/4D ULTRASOUND?

How do I prepare for my 3D/4D Ultrasound?

Unlike the medical ultrasound visit, customers of 3D/4D ultrasound centers are not advised to hold their urine or have a full bladder before their 3D/4D ultrasound appointment. In order to get good images, ultrasound centers advise customers to drink adequate amounts of water (32 ounces/day) for the one to two weeks prior to their appointment. This is in order to ensure there is an adequate amount of amniotic fluid around the fetus and that the fluid is clear. Drinking large amounts of water immediately before the 3D/4D ultrasound appointment does not help to have clearer 3D/4D ultrasound images.

    • WILL I ALWAYS GET A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE OF MY BABY?

Will I always get a beautiful picture of my baby?

Usually, but not always. Sometimes if the baby is persistently looking face down, i.e. towards your spine it may be difficult to see the baby's face. If this happens, a repeat scan in one hour will usually succeed because the baby has turned to a favorable position. We make no promises that the images will be similar to those you might have seen elsewhere or even from our clinic, or that we can always meet everyone's expectations. Every baby scans differently, depending on its gestational age, position, amount of fluid, and mother's condition. We promise to make every effort to obtain the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby that can be seen.

    • ARE YOU ABLE TO TELL THE SEX OF THE BABY?

Are you able to tell the sex of the baby?

Yes, in most cases we can provide an indication of the sex of the baby. We can't however guarantee that the baby will cooperate during your session. Certain factors such as body tissue content, developmental stage and fetal position all affect the ability to determine sex.

    • IS THE 3D/4D ULTRASOUND COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Is the 3D/4D Ultrasound covered by Insurance?

At this point, insurance does not cover the costs of our Ultrasounds. Since this is an elective procedure and is not intended to be a replacement for your doctor ordered Ultrasound, you will need to pay the cost of this Ultrasound as an out of pocket expense. We accept cash, checks,Visa, MasterCard, and debit cards.
